The obverse has a wreath tied at the bottom with leaves in groups of three. There is a legend in four lines. The reverse has a double cornucopia within pomegranate, bordered with dots. With traces of previous strikings on one or both sides, this historically significant coin is a perfect example of history being confirmed by archeology. The cultural struggle of the Jews against Hellenization is well known today, but seldom do we see a physical manifestation of that struggle. On the first coins of Hyrcanus' father, Alexander Jannaeus, he called himself "Yehonatan the High Priest". On later coins, due to the Hellinist influence on him, he called himself King (not high priest) in Hebrew and in Greek, and used his Greek name, Alexander. During the rule of Hyrcanus II, these "Hellinized" coins evidently displeased the people, or Hyrcanus himself. When he began his rule, Hyrcanus reverted to the older "Hebrew" coin form and over struck the previous coins. This coin is one of the "Hellinized" coins which was restruck, probably before it left the mint.Ancient coin jewelry should not be worn in instances where it could get wet. From the Ancient Coin Collection and comes with a certificate of authenticity and information about the coin. Why Buy Coin Jewelry? Not only is coin jewelry collectable, but it?s a fantastic way to display the coins you love, whether you're an avid collector or first-time buyer!
